USAID Farmer-to-Farmer Sub-award Program Launch with ISF Guatemala
Project Background
EWB-USA and EWB-USA’s Guatemala Country Office (ISF Guatemala) in partnership with Heifer International are pleased to announce our launching of a 16 month sub-award program under the The USAID-funded Partners of the Americas’ John Ogonowski and Doug Bereuter Farmer-to- Farmer Program, Engineering a Sustainable Cardamom Drying Process.
Guatemala is the world’s largest cardamom exporter with over 350,000 smallholder farmers dependent on cardamom as their primary source of income.. This program will partner experienced US volunteers with smallholder farmers to carry out in-depth engineering assessments at 12 cooperative drying facilities and deliver recommendations as well as training to improve both drying equipment and processes. These recommendations can lead to reduced processing costs as well as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and decreased deforestation through the more efficient use of fuel.
The volunteers will be drawn from EWB-USA’s extensive and diverse network of engineers and will be supported by our partners ISF Guatemala and Heifer International.
