RELEASE: EWB-USA Restructures Global Partnerships to Build Local Capacity, Not Just Local Projects

Denver, CO — Around the world, the most effective development efforts are increasingly being led by local organizations and communities. Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA)'s new Purposeful Partnership Model (PPM) reflects this evolution, strengthening local leadership while connecting volunteers, governments, nonprofits, and funders around long-term strategies for sustainable infrastructure.

The Purposeful Partnership Model brings together EWB-USA volunteers, in-country nonprofit organizations, community leaders, government agencies, and funders around a shared strategy for each country. Rather than treating each project as a separate effort, the model connects partners and projects with national and international development goals so they can share knowledge, respond to regional priorities, and build on experience.

The model builds on nearly two decades of EWB-USA work in several participating countries. Completed projects in key partnership countries like Ecuador, Guatemala, Kenya, Peru, and Uganda have reached more than 3.2 million people. These projects include water and sanitation systems, healthcare infrastructure, pedestrian bridges and technical training programs. EWB-USA measures long-term success by whether infrastructure continues to deliver lasting benefits after its direct involvement ends. Through the PPM, EWB-USA invests in local organizations and connects community priorities with technical expertise, volunteers, and resources to support broader, country-level impact.

Partner organizations are reviewed based on factors such as project experience, technical capabilities, financial management, community relationships, organizational structure, and alignment with EWB-USA’s goals. As these partnerships grow, local organizations may receive grants, training, operational support and opportunities to pursue larger funding programs with EWB-USA.

For example, in Ecuador, Fundación Ingenieros en Acción (FIEA Ecuador), a key EWB-USA partner, has designed a strategic work plan to significantly improve public health over the next few years. This plan is underpinned by three main approaches: WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), One Health, and Nexus (interdependence between energy, water and food), aligned with key national and international policies.

Among the main actions that FIEA carries out, it has focused on reducing Chronic Child Malnutrition, preventing water-borne diseases, and embedding climate adaptation into the design of the country's community systems, schools and health centers.

In Uganda, EWB-USA is partnering with EWB-East Africa to deliver a similar strategy around resilient health care facilities. This strategy relies on continuity, stewardship, and post-handover functionality to ensure the systems will support better outcomes for communities long-term.

Although the structure behind the work is evolving, the principle remains the same: infrastructure is more likely to last when the people who will use and maintain it help shape the solution from the beginning.

Over the coming years, EWB-USA will continue strengthening local implementing organizations, supporting national engineering capacity, expanding partnerships with governments and universities, and pursuing larger, programmatic investments that build on the success of community-led projects.

Through the Purposeful Partnership Model, EWB-USA is helping build stronger local organizations, stronger engineering institutions, and stronger communities, creating the conditions for sustainable infrastructure that continues delivering impact long after individual projects are complete.
