Approach & Solutions

People and partnerships are at the core of Engineers Without Borders USA’s (EWB-USA) development approach. We take a community-centered, holistic approach, leveraging our engineering expertise through multiyear partnerships alongside communities and local NGO partners. We aim to deliver engineering solutions that are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. Our approach includes capacity sharing, the use of appropriate technology, and emphasizes long-term operation and maintenance.

We Believe:

  • Collaboration and partnerships amplify impact.
  • Local leaders and communities are critical for sustainable, positive change.
  • Engineering solutions foster community growth.
  • Leadership is nurtured through multidisciplinary, cross-cultural, and hands-on experiences.
  • Continuous learning drives innovation and adaptation

At Engineers Without Borders USA, our approach is deeply intertwined with advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These goals represent a global blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. Our projects are designed to address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and climate change while ensuring communities thrive through resilient infrastructure.

Educating Leaders

Education and learning are foundational to our organization and integrated into everything we do. EWB-USA’s headquarters and field office staff equip our student and professional volunteers with the training and educational resources to thrive in their individual and collective roles. The projects they work on through EWB-USA enhance the traditional classroom experience and hone out-of-the-box thinking that equips them to thrive in the workplace.

At Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA), educating future leaders is central to our mission. We provide student and professional volunteers with hands-on experience through real-world projects that serve underserved communities. This practical approach enhances classroom learning, fosters leadership, and encourages innovative problem-solving. Our collaboration between experienced engineers and students ensures that both technical skills and leadership abilities are developed, driving impactful, community-centered projects. EWB-USA includes:

  • Over 6,000 student volunteers
  • 155 student chapters around the US

EWB-USA is cultivating a generation of leaders equipped to address global challenges with empathy and expertise.

“We make sure that we’re building local expertise, are accountable to local leadership, and are training local engineers and technicians so the projects last for generations. We have so much to learn from our partner communities. They are the experts. They have an ingenuity that is really unique and is not taught in Western engineering classrooms.”
