Press Release: Engineers Without Borders USA and Xylem Expand Partnership to Improve Clean Water Access for 500,000 People in Kenya
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2025
Kenya — Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) and Xylem, a global water technology leader, announced a three-year initiative to provide sustainable clean water access to 500,000 people in Kenya. The partnership expands EWB-USA’s Purposeful Partnership Model (PPM), which empowers local organizations and communities to build, manage, and maintain water systems over the long term.
The first projects supported by the partnership are underway in Kirengo, Nyabohanse, and Kogwari, Kenya. In Kirengo, a new system will serve more than 5,500 residents, including four schools and community centers. In Nyabohanse, over 1,700 people will gain access to safe water through solar-powered pumps, boreholes, and local distribution networks. These projects are co-led with engineering students at universities around the US, serving EWB-USA’s dual mission and Xylem’s commitment to the next generation of STEM leaders.
The partnership also involves Xylem employees in mentoring, technical advising, and hands-on volunteering with EWB-USA’s water projects. This not only advances professional growth, but also furthers the mission of water equity by ensuring communities have lasting access to clean and safe water. Moreover, the partnership amplifies STEM outreach by weaving in water science, water engineering, and innovative water resource management, aiming to inspire the next generation to pursue careers dedicated to solving the world’s water challenges through technology and humanitarian action.
Since 2003, EWB-USA has carried out 100 projects in Kenya, 66 of which have focused specifically on water, benefiting over 450,000 people. Previously, Xylem and EWB-USA partnered in Zomba, Malawi, to enhance access to clean water in healthcare facilities, resulting in improved outcomes for 400,000 individuals. Building on this experience, the new initiative in Kenya, in collaboration with Xylem, aims not only to broaden water access but also to strengthen local capacity, fostering resilient communities and sustainable infrastructure.
