Release: EWB-USA, HDR Partnership Expands for Underserved US Communities
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 8, 2026
Denver, CO — Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is furthering a partnership with HDR, supported by a $600,000 multiyear investment to strengthen community-driven engineering services across the United States. EWB-USA has partnered with communities in the United States for more than 11 years and meaningfully contributed to infrastructure improvements and community resiliency. Two million people in the United States live without access to clean drinking water, adequate sanitation and critical infrastructure, impacting their quality of life.
HDR, a 100% employee-owned global professional services firm specializing in architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services, brings more than a century of expertise and a deep commitment to making a lasting impact in the communities where its employees live and work. This collaboration reflects a shared belief that engineering and design excellence, when paired with community partnership, can help build stronger, more resilient communities.
Through this investment, HDR is supporting EWB-USA’s U.S.-based work, enabling the delivery of critical infrastructure solutions in communities that lack access to professional engineering and architectural resources due to economic, geographic or systemic barriers. Funding will support technical staff who coordinate projects and community partnerships, mobilize and train volunteers, and provide the professional oversight necessary to ensure high-quality and compliant engineering outcomes.
“This partnership helps fulfill our commitment to elevate our communities, industry and professions with human-inspired technical and creative excellence,” says Doug Wignall, president of HDR’s architecture practice. “We were founded on serving rural, under-resourced communities back in 1917, and this spirit of service has lived in our DNA ever since. I’m excited to see what avenues open for my colleagues, EWB-USA and the communities we will get to work with along the way.”
By combining HDR’s expertise with EWB-USA’s delivery model, this partnership will expand access to essential engineering services in underserved communities in the U.S. while giving HDR employees opportunities to lead, grow and do meaningful work. This partnership is designed to meaningfully scale EWB-USA’s impact in the United States, improving lives and livelihoods.
HDR’s commitment reflects more than financial support; it demonstrates compassion in action, leveraging the talent and passion of its employee-owners to address real-world challenges. Together, HDR and EWB-USA are building a model for how engineering expertise and community partnership can create sustainable, equitable impact across the United States.
