A Thanksgiving Story of Collaboration and Hope in Anza, California
This Thanksgiving, we're reflecting on the power of partnerships and community resilience, as exemplified by the inspiring story unfolding in Anza, California. Nestled amidst the arid mountains, this small town has long faced a critical water shortage and high fire danger, hindering its development and leaving residents vulnerable. But thanks to the collaborative spirit of a dedicated community leader, tribal entities, and the Community Engineering Corps (CECorps), a beacon of hope has emerged to solve their water access challenge.
Meet Frank Miller, a long-time resident and passionate advocate for Anza. Witnessing the town's struggles firsthand, Frank has spearheaded a transformative project to bring reliable water infrastructure to his community. Recognizing the complexity of the challenge, he reached out to Community Engineering Corps (CECorps) - a partnership between the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association, and Engineers Without Borders USA.
CECorps, answered the call, providing crucial support in the form of preliminary design reports and cost estimations for a much-needed water system. This system, which includes a proposed 4-mile pipeline, would not only provide essential fire protection but also lay the groundwork for future development and access to potable water.
What makes this story truly special is the spirit of collaboration at its heart. Frank, working closely with CECorps engineers and volunteers, has fostered a strong relationship with the local tribes, recognizing their vital role in the region's water resources. Together, they have navigated complex water rights negotiations and secured a settlement that paves the way for a more sustainable future.
This Thanksgiving, as we gather with loved ones and express gratitude for our blessings, let's also celebrate the unwavering spirit of communities like Anza. Through partnerships and a shared vision, they are overcoming challenges and building a brighter future. This project is a testament to the power of collective action and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and resilience can prevail.
As the Anza project progresses, EWB-USA, through the Community Engineering Corps, remains committed to supporting this inspiring community on its journey toward a full, healthy, and thriving future. We are grateful for the opportunity to play a part in their story and excited to see what they achieve in the years to come.
