Mariscal Castilla: The Cascading Benefits of Clean Water
In the heart of Peru’s Amazon Rainforest, nestled at the headwaters of the mighty Amazon River, lies the vibrant community of Mariscal Castilla. Several years ago, a transformative partnership with EWB-USA’s dedicated Central Houston Professional Chapter changed their lives.
Before joining hands with EWB-USA, Mariscal Castilla’s lifeline was the Amazon River itself, their primary source of water. Sadly, this lifeline often brought illness, particularly to the children. EWB-USA, with the support of local partner Amazon Promise, embarked on a journey with the community, one marked by unwavering determination and dedication.
Through a series of collaborative efforts, EWB-USA and the community implemented a remarkable rainwater harvesting system that utilizes the roof of an existing community building to capture daily rainfall. Alongside this, they established a chlorination system and network of water distribution with taps strategically placed throughout the village. With these life-altering changes, the community witnessed a profound transformation.
The health of Mariscal Castilla’s residents soared as the water quality improved. But the ripple effect extended far beyond health. Easier access to water freed up precious time, enabling the community to thrive. They channeled their newfound time and energy into artisan projects, sparking a surge in Amazonian tourism to their community.
The community takes great pride in its water systems and keeps it very well maintained. Through training provided by the chapter, they are equipped to clean and repair the system, which has now been in place for nearly five years. In addition to regular maintenance, they also are able to maintain the system’s RESILIENCE. Although the ever-changing shape of the mighty Amazon River has led to land erosion in their community, they have been able to successfully remove one of the distribution taps that was once located on land that has now washed away, and they have long-term plans to re-locate the entire system as the community begins a relocation effort.
Mariscal Castilla’s partnership with EWB-USA has not only improved health outcomes for families but has also increased their economic capacity and ability to pursue one of those precious things that make life worth living- art. Thanks to the partnership between Amazon Promis, our generous donors, and the chapter’s dedicated volunteers, lives have been changed, health has been restored, and an entire community now flourishes with newfound hope and opportunity.
