Release: EWB-USA Launches Summer Program to Restore Lifesaving Equipment in Guatemala

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 24, 2026

Denver, CO — In many hospitals in Guatemala, critical medical equipment is left unused, not because clinicians lack skill, but because the tools intended to save lives are no longer operational. This summer, Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) will collaborate with hospital partners in Guatemala to repair essential medical equipment through its Community Health Institute, which is set to run this summer.

Since 2002, EWB-USA has partnered with communities worldwide to deliver sustainable, community-driven engineering solutions. In 2024, EWB-USA improved its ability to support hospitals in low-resource countries that often receive broken or outdated medical equipment by integrating Engineering World Health (EWH) into its programs. EWB-USA is now able to offer participants valuable technical experience while enhancing patient care.

This new EWB-USA opportunity builds on the impactful model of the former EWH Institute. As one participant shared: For me, the most valuable part of the program was meeting other engineering students from all over the world. I really enjoyed learning about different cultures. Every single participant brought something unique to our group.”

For two months, June 7 through August 9, 2026, participants will work alongside hospital partners in Guatemala to repair and maintain vital medical equipment, support hospital staff, and improve healthcare access for underserved communities.

During the first month of the program, participants will complete intensive training in medical equipment repair, including mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, equipment use, and maintenance. Participants are integrated into local hospitals and communities, collaborating with local technicians and hospital leadership.

During the second month, participants work in host hospitals, repairing and installing medical equipment and training local staff on proper use and maintenance. This ensures that maternity wards have functioning incubators and trauma units have operational X-ray machines. At a time when medical equipment waste is a global concern, this hands-on work helps close critical gaps in care while advancing more sustainable healthcare systems. The result is improved patient outcomes and lasting capacity within partner hospitals.

The Community Health Institute is designed for students and early-career professionals interested in engineering, healthcare, and global development who want to apply their skills where they are needed most.
