Stronger Together: Critical Partnerships Build Resilience in the Face of Disaster

In a world where natural disasters can hit without warning, the importance of preparedness cannot be overstated. At Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA), we understand that being ready and resilient is crucial in mitigating the harmful impacts of these calamities. This is why we are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our donors and the fruitful partnerships we have forged with other NGOs. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals.

Partnering for Progress
When disaster strikes, health facilities become the backbone of emergency response. Recognizing this, EWB-USA builds critical partnerships, like the one with Fos Feministas (formerly IPPFWHR) and the Clara Lionel Foundation, to strengthen the infrastructure of sexual and reproductive clinics in Belize and the Dominican Republic. Our shared aim was to enhance their preparedness for climate emergencies and other disasters. This visionary partnership focused on the Sabana Profamilia Clinic in Santo Domingo, as well as two community clinics within the Belize Family Life Association (BFLA).

A Holistic Approach
Our commitment went beyond mere infrastructure improvements. EWB-USA took a holistic approach by providing guidance materials and training to over 20 dedicated healthcare providers. With the assistance of three volunteers, we meticulously reviewed architectural and solar panel designs, ensuring the utmost precision in their installation. One exceptional volunteer, Chris Stearns PE, worked tirelessly alongside EWB-USA and Fos Feminista staff to develop a comprehensive package of preparedness guidance documents for small to medium clinics. These resources, including pre and post-disaster checklists and a resiliency assessment sheet, are now readily accessible on the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) website.

A Milestone in Strength
In April 2022, just before the onset of hurricane season, EWB-USA volunteer Chris Stearns embarked on a journey to Santiago, Dominican Republic. Supported by Airlinks, he conducted a final structural inspection of the upgrades at Profamilia’s Sabana Perdida Clinic. Chris meticulously reviewed every aspect, from solar panel connections to roof modifications, steel beam connections, and ramp extensions. This inspection marked a significant milestone in our project, symbolizing a fortified clinic with an increased ability to serve an estimated 3,000 patients daily in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Building for Resilience
The critical infrastructure upgrades at the Profamilia clinic encompassed disability access, structural enhancements, and the installation of a solar PV system. Additionally, we developed and tested emergency response plans in conjunction with the clinic’s workforce. These measures guarantee the continuity of vital services during emergencies. The infrastructure updates at the Belize Clinics included roof renovations, improved drainage systems, and mitigation activities to address water seepage.

Community-Guided Support
EWB-USA’s support in preparedness activities extends beyond infrastructure enhancements. By collaborating with existing local and national networks of service providers, responders, and engineers, we ensure that our resources align with the needs and aspirations of the communities we serve. Together, we are a support system, empowering communities to withstand natural disasters before they strike. These efforts are estimated to benefit over 30,000 beneficiaries in both countries.

A Beacon of Hope
Thanks to generous supporter contributions and the collective hard work of our partners, the Belize Family Life Association and Profamilia clinics are fortified to serve their patients. These clinics have been strengthened to better withstand natural events, while the preparedness materials we have provided offer them a framework to prepare for future disasters and reopen swiftly after major catastrophes. By doing so, they can effectively respond to their patient’s needs and provide crucial emergency support.
With these critical partnerships, a brighter future has been forged for those impacted by disasters. As we embark on this onward path, let us extend an invitation to sustain the journey of compassion and empowerment, and serve as a vital lifeline for those in dire circumstances, fostering a world where preparedness, resilience, and the ability to confront any adversity thrive within communities. United in purpose, we can leave a profound and enduring imprint, igniting hope for those who require it most.
