Where Confidence Begins: Small Steps, Brave Choices, Real Growth

Daniella Ronda | EWB-USA Marketing Intern

As I pack my bags for this year’s EWB-USA National Conference, one event stands out in my mind: the Jobs and Opportunities Fair on Thursday evening. It brings to mind my first experiences with networking and professional development, the moments that taught me how to engage, build relationships, and navigate unfamiliar spaces.

My first real encounter with professional development wasn’t in a classroom, or on a resume, it was at an evening with industry event. I was a freshman, and I didn’t have anyone in my family who worked in engineering. Corporate America was a world I barely knew. I walked in with my resume, my elevator pitch, a nervous smile, and my friends close for support. We split up to explore different companies, and suddenly I was on my own.

What surprised me most was how human it all felt. The conversations weren’t polished performances; they were thoughtful exchanges. Recruiters asked about my interests, not just my experience. I learned that curiosity, attentiveness, and a willingness to engage mattered just as much as technical knowledge. I left with a few business cards, but more importantly, with the realization that growth often begins in discomfort. Professional development wasn’t just about landing an internship; it was about learning how to show up with confidence before I felt fully ready.

My friend experienced professional development through initiative. As a sophomore, she realized that securing a job wasn’t just about waiting for opportunity; it was about creating it. Ambition pushed her to approach recruiters, to ask questions, to connect with professionals she had never met before. What began as unease transformed into confidence. She learned not only what companies expected of engineers, but also that she could rise to meet those expectations, equipped with integrity, curiosity, and persistence.

Another friend approached growth differently, through creativity. She is working on publishing a digital zine with her classmates, and the project has become a classroom in itself. Every stage (researching personal testimonies, presenting arguments visually, refining layouts) has taught her lessons about respect, collaboration, and advocacy. The editing process forced her to accept critique gracefully, communicate clearly, and stand by her vision while honoring others’. The zine is more than a creative project; it’s professional development in practice: learning to navigate challenges, negotiate ideas, and grow in ways that translate directly into real-world skills.

Each of these stories points to the same truth: professional development isn’t a checklist or a line on a resume. It’s an accumulation of small steps, brave choices, and human connections. It’s the freshman learning to navigate a crowded room of strangers, the sophomore taking initiative to meet professionals on her own terms, the creative mind balancing personal vision with collaborative input. These experiences build not just skills, but confidence, perspective, and resilience.

It’s in moments of reflection, in projects that push you, and in conversations that stretch your comfort zone. It’s in the small victories, the recruiter who remembered your name, the mentor who offered guidance, and the realization that you can hold your own even without a predefined roadmap. These experiences shape more than careers; they shape character, empathy, and a sense of possibility.

The Jobs and Opportunities Fair at the EWB-USA 2026 National Conference is a doorway into that same journey. It’s not just a chance to hand out resumes; it’s a space to practice, to learn, to step into new environments, and to discover your capacity for growth. Whether you’re a freshman attending your first career fair, a sophomore ready to take initiative, or a student exploring creative projects that intersect with professional skills, the fair is an invitation: come ask questions, start conversations, and experience growth in action.

Professional development is human. It’s messy, exciting, sometimes intimidating, and always transformative. Each first step, each leap of courage, each lesson learned in conversation or collaboration contributes to who you are and who you are becoming. Step into the fair ready to explore, to connect, and to grow. The opportunity is waiting, and the journey begins the moment you walk through the doors.
